I sense that just as we're starting to pick up momentum (with three more Congressmen coming on board just this week), the Impeachment movement is faltering. We have splintered into so many different groups it's hard to be a volunteer without being in the crossroads between two different groups with two different approaches. This is what has happened to me lately. Neither approach is absolutely wrong or right - both approaches will achieve good things, but try convincing the leaders of these groups that both approaches are good. Everyone wants their own little empire, few want to work together understanding the scratching of backs approach.
So what to do? You have to take up one and leave the other, so I've abandoned the selling buttons idea-I'm a lousy salesman anyway. I've also abandoned the Northern Virginia Impeachment Meet-up, which never gets a response and was costing me money without a valuable return. I'm sticking with our original impeachment group, the Virginians for Peace and Accountability, at least half-heartedly until the peace group, the Prince William Peacemakers, picks up again in the fall.
I'm wondering when the whole impeachment thing is going to blow up. The "Summer of Impeachment" just didn't happen. Many groups that could have helped wanted to focus on peace rather than impeachment. Perhaps they were right after all. The idea of forcing government to take on a task which they felt would distract from their beloved 2008 Presidential elections was to much to ask of these corporate pigs. So I'm less idealistic than I was last year, when I worked on Andy Hurst's campaign, but I've reached the same conclusion. Until we can get better people in office, it won't matter how often we go and talk to them. Tom Davis will never be responsive to us. I know this, and yet my group is planning another meeting with him in August and I'll probably attend.
So the fledgling little impeachment group continues on, with Greg at the helm, dreaming the impossible dream. We'll see how long his energy lasts. Mine has just about expired.
